William Leon Bertels was born May 11, 1911 in Deer Trail, Colorado to Mathias and Daisy (Chandler) Bertels. He grew up on a small homestead in eastern Colorado, was educated in a small one-room schoolhouse, and graduated from the eighth grade. He moved with his mother and father to Ohio, and returned to Byers, Colorado in 1930. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad up to and through the war years.
In 1939, he married Leona C. Thompson of Sidney, Nebraska. They lived in Byers where he worked for the county road department and a local retailer. In 1950 they moved to Winona, Kansas, where Mr. Bertels managed a grain elevator. In 1954 they moved to Wakeeney, Kansas, were he worked as a manager of a larger grain facility. They moved to Dix, Nebraska in 1963 where he worked for Farmer's Co-op as anager of the grain elevator. In 1968 they moved to Sidney where he worked as a carpenter until his retirement in 1973.
He died on Saturday, April 28, 1990 at Memorial Hospital in Sidney, Nebraska.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
He was survived by his wife, Leona, of Sidney; a son, George, La Grande, Oregon; a grandson; two sisters, Helen McCoy of Byers and Bessie Clark of Denver; and many nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Alvis and Louis Bertels, predeceased him.
