Born to William Joseph Dupree (1825-1892) & Charlotte Bell Dupree (1825-1912), who married in 1851. William was one-eighth Cherokee through his mother, Charlotte, whose maternal grandmother was a Cherokee.

He married Fannie Lucy Wright (1861-1950) on Jan. 11, 1883, in Quitman, TX. They came to Indian Territory together in 1890 and settled 3 miles northwest of Vinita. William died at age 92.
