Death: Sep. 21, 1901

Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. A Harvard graduate, he was part of a successful law firm in Cincinnati, Ohio at the outbreak of the war. On September 18, 1862, he was commissioned Colonel in command of the 7th Ohio Volunteer Cavalry and went into the field with the army of Ohio. He joined General Burnside and took command of a brigade then in Kentucky. In the summer of 1864, he took command of one wing of the Union Army in the fight at Cynthiana, served in the Atlanta campaign with General Sherman, going to the sea and commanded the cavalry of the army of Ohio during that march. He took part in the campaign of Nashville under General Thomas, which resulted in the destruction of General Hood's Confederate Army. His last service was in the cavalry campaign under General Wilson, through Mississippi and Georgia. For his distinguished duty, he was brevetted Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on June 20, 1865. After the war he settled in Frontenac, Minnesota and made large land investments that he had arranged for a summer resort. His Frontenac camp became one of the most fashionable summer resorts in the country and is now the Frontenac State Park, Goodhue County, Minnesota. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
