World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. He was gazetted for the award on January 11, 1918 for his actions as a sergeant in the 1st Battalion, Border Regiment, British Army, on November 20, 1917 at the Battle of Cambrai, near Marcoing, France. Born in Fulham, London, England, he joined the British Army following the outbreak of World War I in July 1914 and was sent to the Western Front in France. His Victoria Cross citation reads: "On 20 November 1917 at Marcoing, France, the leading company was checked by heavy fire from a gun mounted on a position which covered the approaches. Sergeant Spackman, realising that it would be impossible for the troops to advance, went through heavy fire to the gun, where he succeeded in killing all but one of the gun crew and then captured the gun." In addition to the Victoria Cross, he also received the 1914-15 Star, the British War Medal (1914-20), the Victory Medal (1914-19), and the Military Medal. He died in Southhampton, Hampshire, England at the age of 78. His Victoria Cross is privately held.
