Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. He graduated from the US Military Academy in 1853, was commissioned an officer in the US Infantry and served on the Frontier. At the start of the Civil War, he resigned and was appointed a Major in the Confederate Army. In July, 1862, he was promoted Colonel in command of the 5th Confederate Infantry, participating in the invasion of Tennessee and at the Battle of Gettysburg. Promoted Brigadier General in September, 1863, while leading a charge on Union artillery at Missionary Ridge in November, 1863, he was wounded and had to be removed from the field. When he returned to duty, he was wounded again during the Atlanta Campaign in July, 1864 and after recovering spent the remainder of the war in operations through Tennessee. After the war, he was elected Mississippi State Superintendent of Education and served as an agent in the US Indian Service, 1893 to 1897.
