Maxim Kopf was born in Vienna, Austria and raised in Prague, Czechoslovakia. His paintings were strongly influenced by expressionism and later created works with biblical themes and landscapes. His works are held in the Everson Museum of Art, the Hood Museum of Art, the Memorial Art Gallery, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art - New York, the Saint Louis Art Museum, and the National Gallery in Prague.

His first marriage was to sculptor, Mary Durasova, which ended in divorce in 1933. His second wife was an actress, Lotte Stein, which ended in divorce.

He first came to the United States in 1923 to do scenic work for Ziegfeld and assisted in painting murals in the Ziegfeld Theatre.

Kopf was in Prague when Hitler took over. He escaped to Paris and was interned as an enemy alien. After a few months he was released and went to Morocco and was interned again. Altogether he spent two and a half years in camps.

Kopf again reached the United States in 1941. He met Dorothy Thompson in 1942. They were married June 15, 1943 at Dorothy's home in Barnard, Vermont. They were married for 15 years until his death in 1958 and he is buried next to his wife.

Maxim Kopf - Vienna born Artist and husband of Columnist Dorothy Thompson died Monday in Mary Hitchcock Hospital. He suffered a heart seizure several weeks ago.

Kopf, a Painter and Scuptor, was known chiefly for his liturgical works. His paintings hang in six American museums in addition to several in Europe.
