United States Congresswoman. Lera Millard Thomas served in the United States House of Representatives as a Democrat representing the Eighth District of Texas, becoming the first woman from Texas in the U.S. Congress. After her husband, Albert Thomas' death on February 15, 1966, a special election was held on March 26, 1966 to elect a replacement representative for his remaining term in the 89th Congress, and she was elected, serving until January 3, 1967. For more than 30 years, she had been busy behind the scenes to cultivate the political career of her husband, Albert Thomas, who became one of the most powerful members in the House of Representatives.She attended Brenau College in Gainesville, Georgia, and the University of Alabama. In 1922, Millard married her high school sweetheart, Albert Thomas. The couple had a son, Jim, who died very young and then they had two daughters. After leaving Congress, she founded The Millard's Crossing Historic Village, which was a 37-acre site on her family's land with restored buildings dating as early as 1830s and including a fully restored red train caboose.
