Roman Catholic Cardinal. A native of Bordeaux, Paul Joseph Marie Gouyon studied at the University and Seminary of the city. He also attended the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice in Paris, the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, and the Catholic Institute of Paris. Ordained priest on March 13, 1937 after serving in the French Army during the Second World War, he performed pastoral work in Bordeaux, serving as pastor of Montussan and of Beychac from 1940 till 1944, chaplain of the Lycée Michel-Montaigne between 1944 and 1951, and vicar general of the archdiocese. Raised to the rank of domestic prelate of His Holiness on April 6, 1955, Pope Pius XII elected him bishop of the diocese of Bayonne, receiving his episcopal consecration on October 7, 1957. Named coadjutor archbishop of Rennes and archbishop of the titular see of Pessinus on August 6, 1963, he succeeded Cardinal Clément-Emile Roques as archbishop of the metropolitan see of Rennes-Dol-Saint-Malo on September 4, 1964. Pope Paul VI created him cardinal priest with the title of Natività di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo a Via Gallia in the consistory of April 28, 1969. National president of Pax Christi, he retired from the pastoral hovernment of his see on October 15, 1985, and was succeeded by Archbishop Jacques André Marie Jullien. Cardinal Gouyon died in his native Bordeaux in the morning of Tuesday, September 26, 2000. His funeral mass was celebrated at the metropolitan cathedral of Rennes on Friday, September 29, at 15 hrs. He lies buried in the cemetery of the Mother House of the Little Sisters of the Poor in Saint-Pern. A street in Rennes carries his name while a commemorative plaque in his memory has been since erected in the city's metropolitan cathedral.
