Named provost of Sant'Andrea a Porta Romana, Milan, at 67 years of age he was elected Auxiliary for the Archdiocese of Milan by Pope Pius XII, receiving his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Famagusta on July 29, 1945, from Cardinal Ildefonso Alfredo Schuster OSB., assisted by Bishop Giovanni Bargiggia and his blood brother Archbishop Adriano Bernareggi.
Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Milan, Bishop Domenico passed away on October 22, 1962, aged 85, and lies buried in the cemetery of his native Oreno.
