The 112th Regimental Combat Team (RCT) departed Aitape for Leyte in the Philippines on October 31, 1944.

Nov 14, 1944 - Landed on east coast of Leyte, Philippine Islands. Went into immediate combat attached to 1st Cavalry Division to open Ormac highway. Engaged in bitter fighting over very difficult terrain in Mt. Minoro-Sinayawan area and assisted in capture of Loney and Cananga.

His parents were Paul and Catherine (Meurer) Heidenfelder. He was one of 12 children who survived to adulthood: Finton, Johanna, Paul, Christine, Marie, Margaret (Dolly), Joseph (Bud), Katheryn, Virginia, Bernard, Norbert, and Robert.
