HISTORY OF SANFORD - by Edwin Emery:
*********************************
Abigail moved to Sanford with her parents in 1788. She remembered that there were woods everywhere, full of wolves, "Wolves came around the house so you could hear them breathe", was her expressive language. She remembered that a young domestic animal was killed by them in a yard near by.
She remembered the first 'Grammar Street' school-house which stood in a field a short distance from her father's house. The building, which, when used for school purposes, was a rough unfinished affair, where boards on rocks were used for seats.
Abigail used to walk from her father's home
on Shaw's Ridge down to Parson Sweat's meeting-house through rain and sunshine, heat and cold, and sit during the hour of service without minding it. In the coldest weather, there was no fire, and ofttimes, with wind whistling through the cracks, the rain or snow would beat in upon the people.
Some of the more fortunate carried warming-pans or foot stoves, but none escaped the hardships of those cold winters, if they ventured out to church.
