HUNT

On Wednesday, March 20, at ten minutes past 10 P. M., THOMAS HUNT, aged 56 years and 10 months. President of the University of Louisiana and Professor of Physiology and Pathology and Special Pathological Anatomy in the Medical Department of the University.

His funeral will take place This Afternoon, at half-past 4 o'clock, from Christ Church. His friends, those of his family, and of his son Carleton Hunt, and of his brothers T. G. Hunt, Randell Hunt and William H. Hunt, and the administrators of the University, the faculties and students of the law and medical departments, and the members of the learned professions, are invited to attend without further notice.

HUNT, Thomas Jr. (1808-1867), physician: Surgeon at Charity Hospital, a founder of Medical College of Louisiana, Professor of Physiology and Pathology, Dean of the medical faculty, and at the time of his death, the President of the University of Louisiana (now Tulane University).


Thomas Hunt was born in Charleston, South Carolina on May 18, 1808, the son of Thomas Hunt Sr. (1780-1845) and Louisa Gaillard (1786-1846). His grandfather held the position of Governor-General of the Bahamas for many years. He was the brother of Theodore Gaillard Hunt (1805-1893), Randell Hunt I (1806-1892), William Henry Hunt (1823-1884 ), and brother-in-law of John Gaillard, well known for twenty years as president of the United States Senate.


Dr. Thomas Hunt Jr. was educated in Philadelphia and at Ecole de Médecine, Paris. Early in his career, he was noted when he volunteered to board alone a vessel in Charleston harbor infeected by Asiatic cholera and whose crew were perishing without assistance. Subsequently, the four Hunt brothers (Theodore Gaillard Hunt, Randell Hunt, Thomas Hunt Jr, and William Henry Hunt Sr) moved to New Orleans (1833).


On March 29, 1834 in South Carolina, Dr. Thomas Hunt married 1) Aglae Marie Carleton (1816-1847), daughter and only issue of Henry Carleton (1785-1863), associate justice, Louisiana Supreme Court, and Aglae Pauline Robertine Valentine D'Avezac de Castera (1797-1835).


Thomas and Aglae Carleton Hunt had four children: Louise Livingston Hunt (1834-1914). Judge Carleton Hunt (1836-1921), Henry, died in childhood (1830-1850 census),="" and="" Julia="" Barton="" Hunt="" (1844-1939).="" ="" p=""


On April 1, 1850 in Marengo, Alabama, Dr. Thomas Hunt married 2) Martha Caroline Pride (1813-1869) of North Carolina. Dr. Hunt was a member of the Christ Church Episcopal Cathedral in New Orleans. He died in New Orleans, March 20, 1867, funeral at his church.
