Rachel was the daughter of Thomas Boatright and Elizabeth Ann Wing of South Carolina. She married Willis Smith on November 28, 1839 in Coweta County, Georgia. She and Willis lived in Carroll County, Georgia throughout their marriage. Rachel remained in Carroll County until at least 1870. In 1900, she was living with her daughter Lucy Smith Duke in Spring Creek, Cherokee, AL.

Rachel and Willis had 6 children:
