World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Surrey, England, he served as a Commander in the British Royal Navy. On February 17, 1917, Commander Campbell was in command of the HMS Farborough Q.5 in the North Atlantic, when he sighted a torpedo track. He altered course and allowed the torpedo to hit his Q.5 aft by the engine-room bulkhead. The ships party managed to get back under away convincingly and was followed by the German U-boat. When the submarine had fully surfaced and was within 100 yards of Commander Campbell's badly damaged ship and now lying very low in the water he gave the order to fire. Almost all of the 45 shells fired hit the U-boat which sank. His ship was taken in tow just in time and safely beached. On March 22, 1916, Commander Campbell's ship HMS Farborough Q.5 sank another U-boat. For most prestigious gallantry, he was awarded the Victoria Cross and later achieved the rank of Vice Admiral. He died at age 67 in Middlesex, England.
