John H Perkins was born on February 20, 1825, the son of Timothy and Mary Perkins. About 1844-45 John was living in Missouri. In September and October 1856 two land particles were granted to Serilda Perkins (believed to be his wife) for a total sum of eighty acres in Gentry County. John purchased forty acres on October 1, 1859. At the time of the 1857 John and Serilda had settled in Bourdon County, Kansas, near relatives; John’s brother, Solomon and his two sisters, Rebecca and Mary Ann. In the 1860 Census three children: Jacob, Martin and Emily had been added to the family.
John served as a Private with the Thirty-first Missouri Volunteer Infantry, Company E on August 1, 1862. He was relieved from duty on January 20, 1863. He returned home to his family. Still wanting to serve, he enlisted with the Thirty-ninth Missouri Volunteer Infantry on November 22, 1864. He was mustered out on May 17, 1865 at Benton Barracks near St. Louis. According to family records, John died in 1867, however the date came not be determined.
