Charles A. Hodgkins, 85, passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at UMass Memorial Healthcare - Memorial Campus after an illness.
His wife of 51 years, Elizabeth M. (Lawless) Hodgkins, passed away in 2003. He leaves two sons, Andrew C. Hodgkins and his wife Jennifer of Franklin and Stephen D. Hodgkins and his wife Deborah of Princeton; three daughters, Christine M. Kursewicz and her husband Bernard of Highland Village, TX, Charlene M. Rigie and her husband Roy of Hillsboro, NJ and Susan F. Proulx and her husband Neil of Ashburnham; a son-in-law, Ronald Thunburg of West Boylston; two brothers, Francis and David McGourty; two sisters, Donna Alexandrovich and Mary Van Horn; sixteen grandchildren; several nephews and nieces. A daughter, Jane M. Thunburg predeceased him.
He was born in Worcester, the son of Charles L. and Agnes M. (Andersen) Hodgkins and graduated from Worcester Boys Trade High School. At the age of 17, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the USS Belle Isle during World War II. He was a brick Mason for over 40 years and started his own construction company in 1979. He loved gardening, hunting, fishing and will be fondly remembered for the skating rink he created each winter allowing the neighborhood kids a chance to ice skate.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours from 5 to 7 on Wednesday, Dec 26, in the Miles Funeral Home, 1158 Main Street, Holden. The funeral for Charles will be held from the funeral home on Thursday, Dec. 27, with a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant Street, Worcester.
