A Norfolk native, Adm. Crutchfield was a member and former vestryman of Galilee Episcopal Church. He was a veteran of World War II. He was the commanding officer of Destroyer Division 282 during the Cuban Bay of Pigs combat. As senior officer closest to the beach, he rescued a number of invasion forces. He was commanding officer of the Anti-Submarine Warfare Tactical School in Norfolk and was chief of staff to Commander Cruiser Destroyers Force Atlantic. He retired in 1972 as commander of the naval base in Newport, R.I.
He was a member of the Retired Officers Association and Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He received his master's degree from Harvard Business School and was a graduate of the Naval War College.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Gillelan Crutchfield; two daughters, Pamela C. Ruckner of Fairfax Station and Wanda C. White of Virginia Beach; a son, Robert Crutchfield Jr. of Nags Head; a sister, Ruth C. Bray of Chesapeake; and seven grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in Galilee Episcopal Church by the Rev. John Jordan. Burial with full military honors will be at 1 p.m. Friday in Arlington National Cemetery . Friends may join the family at the residence. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road, is handling arrangements.
