Sarah Abell was the daughter of Cudwith Abell and Mary "Polly" Conn. Her mother died about 1841. Sarah married twice:

1. Robert McCallin Reed, Sept. 15, 1853, Jackson Co., Indiana
Robert was born about 1831, the son of Robert Reed, Sr., and Elizabeth Thompson.

2. Allen Carpenter, Aug. 5, 1857, Jackson Co., Indiana
Their first child, Cudwith, was born in Nodaway Co., Missouri, in 1859. The family was on census there in 1860, but returned to Indiana soon after, likely at the outset of the Civil War.
