He worked on the family farm until about 18 years of age when he entered Yale, where he spent 2 years, prior to going to Harvard, where he graduated in 1785.
Upon finishing school he went into the law office of General B. Bradly in Westminster, Vermont. In the next 18 years he not only practiced law, but also did some farming.
In 1807 he removed to Troy, New York where he formed a partnership with a nephew, Daniel Hall. He remained in this partnership until May 1814.
He served on a commission representing Troy in the proposed Erie Canal in 1816. He was also one of the first trustees of the Emma Willard Female Seminary. From the years 1818 to 1821 he also served as city recorder for the town of Troy.
