Professional Football Player. For ten seasons (1937 to 1942 and 1945 to 1948), he played at the center and linebacker positions in the National Football League with the Cleveland Rams, Philadelphia Eagles and Pittsburgh Steelers. Born Charles James Cherundolo, Jr., he attended Old Forge High School in Pennsylvania and played collegiate football at Penn State University. Signed by the Rams as an non-drafted player, he appeared in 106 regular season games. He distinguished himself during the course of his career as he earned All-Pro status two consecutive years (1941 and 1942). His career was interrupted while he served with the United States Navy during World War II. After retiring as a player, he remained in the sport and launched a lengthy coaching career as an assistant with the Pittsburgh Steelers (1949 to 1961), Philadelphia Eagles (1962 to 1963), Washington Redskins (1964 to 1965) and two separate stints with the Chicago Bears (1966 to 1968 and 1972 to 1974). Cherundolo was named to the Steelers All-Time Team of the pre-1970 era. He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame in 1976. At the time of his death at the age of 96 he was one of the oldest living former NFL players.
