Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point, New York in 1841, and as a 1st Lieutenant he was engaged in the Florida war against the Seminole Indians in 1849 and 1850. At the start of the Civil War, he was a Captain in the 2nd United States Regular Artillery, and was in command of the Little Rock, Arkansas arsenal. In February 1861 he was compelled to evacuate the post by a superior Confederate force. He served under Generals Nathaniel Lyon and John C. Fremont in operations in Missouri as chief of artillery and was promoted Lieutenant Colonel. In February, 1862, he became Brigadier General of the Missouri Militia, in command of the central district of the state. He then engaged in several actions on the frontier and became Inspector General, Chief of Artillery in 1864. He served at the siege of Mobile, Alabama, was Inspector General of the Military division of the Atlantic in August, 1865 and retired from active service as Assistant Inspector General in 1870. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Regular Army on March 13, 1865 for "gallant and meritorious services in the field during the war".
