James Herman Bookout went to be with the Lord on January 9, 2004 after a short illness. He was born in Fulton, MS, on December 1, 1913. He and his family moved to the Rio Grande valley and settled in Santa Rosa, TX in 1921 to farm and grow citrus. He graduated from Santa Rosa High School in 1931 and continued farming with his family until he joined the Navy in 1941. He was a Veteran of WWII and retired from the Navy Reserves as an aircraft mechanic. After leaving active duty in 1946, he started a crop-dusting service with his brother, Bill Bookout in the Valley, while continuing to farm with his family. In 1948, he moved to Corpus Christi and opened the "Ritz Newsstand" on Chaparral Street. In 1948, he met his lifelong partner, Betty Holbrook and they were married on July 5, 1952. In 1950, he sold the newsstand and opened the "Shopmart Pharmacy" on Morgan Street. In 1953, he sold the pharmacy and was called back into Civil Service as an aircraft mechanic at NAS Corpus Christi. He retired from NAS in 1979. He was a longtime member of the Gardendale Baptist Church and most recently a charter member of Yorktown Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Betty Bookout; son, Jeff Bookout (Marla); three grandchildren, Ashley Elizabeth, James Hunter and Peyton Andrew, all of San Antonio; brother, Thomas H. "Bill" Bookout (Aleisha) of Corpus Christi; two nieces, one nephew and a multitude of cousins and extended family he loved dearly. He loved the outdoors and spent his retired years hunting, fishing and following his favorite sports teams. He greatly loved his family; they meant the world to him. He will be greatly missed and was loved by all who knew him. "We will miss you dearly Paw-Paw." Visitation will be held at Cage Mills Funeral Home from 4:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. on Monday, January 12, 2004. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 13, 2004 at Yorktown Baptist Church with Reverend Sam Douglas officiating. Interment will follow at Seaside Memorial Park.
