Rhode Island Governor. As a young man he worked with his father on a passenger and cargo boat that sailed between Warren and Newport, Rhode Island. He also became successful in the dry goods and merchant tailoring business and become President of the Equitable Fire and Marine Insurance Company. Entering politics, he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island, serving (1857 to 1859). In 1859, he was elected as a Republican the 26th Governor of Rhode Island, serving until 1860. After leaving office, he was appointed by President Lincoln as the First Collector of Internal Revenue for the First District of Rhode Island. He also was President of the Equitable Insurance Company, Providence Rhode Island, Director of Warren Manufacturing Company, National Bank and City Savings Bank of Providence, Rhode Island and Providence Warren and Bristol Railroad Company, until his death.
