ORANGEBURG - The Rev. Robert Williams Tanner of Orangeburg SC died on December 20th, 2017. Rev. Tanner was born in Marion March 12th, 1932. He was the son of Ellie Liston Tanner, Sr and Gladys Williams Tanner. After graduating from Marion High School in 1951, He went on to earn an Associate of Arts Degree (1953) from Spartanburg Methodist Junior College and a Bachelor of Arts Degree (1955) from High Point College.

Robert went into the ministry of the United Methodist Church in the beginning as a Director of Christian Education on the staff of Bradenton UMC in Bradenton,Florida in 1955. Rev. Tanner returned to South Carolina in 1960 and was ordained in the United Methodist Church in 1965. He served the SC United Methodist Church for 38 years. He was pastor to the following parishes: Lodge 1960-62; Chester Circuit 1962-66; New Zion 1966-70; Faith,Greer 1970-72; Associate St.John, Aiken 1972-76; Bluffton 1976; Epworth, Charleston 1977-80; Cambridge, Ninety-Six 1980-84; Pacolet-Whitestone 1984-86; Owings-Bramlett 1986-89; Startex 1989-93; Pinopolis 1993-98. Rev. Tanner retired from the United Methodist Church in 1998.

Rev. Tanner was married to the late Paula Jean Everett Tanner. Paula was from Jacksonville, NC. They met at High Point College and were married August 3, 1957. The Tanners have three children, James Levan Tanner of Greenville, Karen Elizabeth Tanner Bowling of Prosperity, and Thomas Everett Tanner of Greenville. He had 2 grandchildren; and 1 great-grandchild.

Rev. Tanner was predeceased in death by a sister Sarah Tanner Johnson, a sister Margaret Tanner Martin, and brother Ellie Liston Tanner Jr.

His funeral will be Dec. 23, 2017 in Marion. The family will receive friends at the Richardson Funeral Home in Marion at 12:30 p.m. A graveside service will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Rev. Ralph T. Bowling, III pastor of Zion United Methodist Church in Prosperity will preside over the funeral service.
