Daniel G. Donley, Sr., 91, of Oakland passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 13, 2013 at the Oakland Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where he had resided for several weeks. Born on April 22, 1921 in Maidsville, WV, he was the son of the late Luther Morris and Grace (Lough) Donley.
He was a rural letter carrier, a square dancer and clogger. Dan and his wife Sara started a club to share their love of clogging with others.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy having served during WW II, a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, American Legion Proctor Kildow Post #71 and the Knights of Columbus. Dan was a friend to everyone with whom he came in contact, spoke well of everyone and never had anything bad to say about them. He is survived by a son, Daniel G. Donley Jr. and wife Sylvia of Oakland; granddaughters, Catherine Donley of Huntingtown, Alyssa (Paugh) Hyson and Nikki Marie Hinebaugh of Deer Park; 5 great grandchildren, Markus, Shiyane, Jessie, Chloe and Sara; and many nieces and nephews who were very special to him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wives, Marie A. (Johnston) Donley in 1976 and Sara (Fredlock) Donley in 2005; a son, Christopher E. Donley in 2010; four brothers, infant Luther Donley, Garland, Robert and James Donley; and five sisters, Estella John, Madaline "Betty Lou" Tustin, Katherine Vandruff, Delores June Friday and Rosalee Hyde.
Friends will be received at the Burdock- Fredlock Funeral Home, P.A., 21 N 2nd St, Oakland on Wednesday, January 16th from 6 to 8 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 17th at 10 AM in the St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church with Rev. Donald J. Parson as celebrant. Interment will follow in Garrett County Memorial Gardens with full military honors. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Garrett County, PO Box 271, Oakland, MD 21550 or St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 208 South Fourth St, Oakland, MD 21550.
