Samuel McGowan was the son of Adam McGowan and Elizabeth Miller McGowan, both born in Maryland.

Samuel was a farmer, brick maker, teacher, Justice of the Peace, and a speaker for the Disciples of Christ church in Mahoning County, Ohio.

Samuel and and his wife, Susan Hartzell McGowan moved from Mahoning Co, Ohio to Orland in 1854, and ran a station on the Underground Railroad from their home on lots 67,68 and 69, purchased from Joel and Sarah Fox. Before 1860, as Samuel's health deteriorated, they moved to Wall Lake, LaGrange County.

Samuel may have spelled his name McGowen, as shown in letters he wrote to the Abolitionist newspaper, The Anti-Slavery Bugle. His children and grandchildren changed the spelling to McGowan, and some branches to MacGowan. Samuel's father, Adam's name was spelled McGouen, McGowan and McGowen. Y DNA evidence has indicated that Adam McGowan was an orphan, whose original name was Aiken, closely related to William Aiken, who married Martha Jenny Burnside. They came to Maryland after Adam was born. William Aiken was probably Adam's uncle. Samuel McGowan and his siblings apparently did not know this information about their father.
