Freda Edblom
1929 - 2013
Freda Mae Shannon was a Sacred Heart Hospital baby born to "LM" Lossie Martin Shannon and Edith Mae (Wilmoth) Shannon on September 24, 1929. She grew up with three older siblings, living her whole life in Eugene and Springfield. Summer's end would find her picking beans on Evonuk's farm for spending money. She sang in chorus and performed on the tumbling team at Springfield Union High School. Transferring to Eugene High School for her senior year, Freda quickly made friends in her new surroundings, a talent she practiced to everyone's benefit through her final days in the hospital. Her new classmates elected her queen of the annual Beaux Arts Ball. She graduated in 1947 and went to work for Chase Gardens.
Freda met Philip Harold Edblom at a dance in the Teen Canteen above Burch's Shoes on Willamette St. In 1948, they exchanged their marriage vows in the chapel that is now the Bijou Art Cinemas. They soon began raising three boys and Freda dedicated herself to homemaking and nurturing her family. Later she and Phil managed and maintained the thirteen small rental houses they bought in the local area. She took justifiable pride in the eye-pleasing success of her gardening.
The family thrived on camping, fishing, skiing, and car vacationing. A 1964 trip to Mexico hooked Freda and Phil on foreign travel. Together they explored some thirty countries and Freda continued to travel with friends after his death in 2000. For travels around Oregon and to other states, they bought a camper van.
Over the last couple decades, most days she gathered with friends for coffee. Walking down to join those friends and then back up the hill kept her fit at 83. They describe her as a vibrant, generous, caring listener who was actively interested in the world and people around her.
Freda passed away after a heart attack on January 16, 2013.
Predeceased: Phil Edblom (husband), Barry Edblom (son killed in a 1983 veneer mill incident), Melvin Shannon (brother).
Surviving: Sons Greg Edblom (Eugene) and Tracy Edblom (Harrisburg). Grandchildren Dustin Edblom (Pendleton) and Nicole Edblom (Harrisburg). Great-grandsons Silas Siders (Harrisburg) and Chaz Edblom (Bend). Twin siblings Norma Holtz (Springfield) and Norval Shannon (Cabo San Lucas, Mexico/Eugene).
