Deceased Name: Mary Linsmeier, founder of preschools, dies at 67. Educator adapted programs to meet needs of children.

Services will be Monday for Mary Therese Linsmeier of Brookfield, founder of 31 preschools and child care centers around the state, who died at her home Friday after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was 67.

Linsmeier, an educator by training, developed many of her teaching methods by adapting other programs to meet the educational needs of her own children.

She and her husband opened their first preschool in Wauwatosa in 1964. The number grew until she became founder and academic adviser for 20 Mary Linsmeier Schools and 11 Children's Edu-Care day care centers.

"She was a mighty special woman," said Camille Wakeman, publicity director of Children's Programs Inc., the parent company of the schools. "She had quite a vision."

She continued her involvement in the schools until her death, Wakeman said. She also was a frequent guest on radio and television programs.

Linsmeier published five academic manuals and a variety of learning aids for classroom use, as well as developing a beginning reading series for young children.

In recent years she became a practicing marriage and family therapist, offering her counseling services to families whose children were enrolled in her programs, as well as maintaining a private practice at the Pathways Counseling Center in Wauwatosa.

A native of Peshtigo, she received a bachelor of arts degree from Marquette University in Milwaukee and a master of science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 1982, she received an alumni award from Marquette University recognizing her creativity and dedication to the highest ideals in the field of early childhood education.

She was featured in "Outstanding Women in Wisconsin," a book published by the state division of the American Association of University Women, and was included in 17 editions of "Who's Who of American Women."

Memberships included the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists and Phi Delta Kappa, the national educators society.

Survivors include her husband, Frank; five sons, Tom, Dave, Bill, Jim and Mark; three daughters, Alice Linsmeier, Nancy Peckham and Patty Jackson; one brother, Frank Newbury; and 11 grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the Becker Ritter Funeral Home, 14075 W. North Ave., Brookfield. Services will be at 7 p.m. on Monday at St. Joseph's Church, 122nd and Center, Wauwatosa. A reception will follow in the parish hall.

Burial is at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Wisconsin Memorial Park, 13235 W. Capitol Drive, Brookfield. Please meet in the main building.

Memorials to the Mary Linsmeier Scholarship Fund, c/o Children's Programs, Inc., 4445 N. 124th St., Brookfield WI 53005, were suggested.
