In 1861 Mark resided in Erie, PA. He volunteered for army service in the Civil War in the 83rd Regiment PA Volunteer Infantry, Company K, Sept. 4, 1861 as a private soldier. He was wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness (VA), May 5, 1864 and was transferred to Company B, 9th Regiment, Veteran Reserve Corps, Dec. 13, 1864. He applied for an invalid soldier's pension, July 23, 1867, which was issued as Certificate #88218. At the time of his death at 74 years of age he resided at 2904 Riverside Ave. in Cleveland, Ohio. He was buried at Monroe Cemetery, April 30, 1917.

Mark married Jennie Remington on 10 Apr 1865 in Jefferson Township, Ashtabula County, Ohio; they had six children: William Wallace, Minnie, Claude R., Mark Jr., James Albert, and Mary R. On 18 Jun 1888, Mark married Mamie Ziegler, and they had two children, Shirley May and Clara Emma.
