Professional Hockey Team Owner. Born in Toronto, Canada, he began his hockey career in the early 1920s, coaching the University of Toronto varsity team. He is best known as the principal owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs of the National Hockey League. As owner of the Maple Leafs from 1927 to 1962, he built Maple Leaf Gardens and his teams won eight Stanley Cup Championships between 1932 and 1962. He also supervised the construction of the Hockey Hall of Fame building in Toronto in 1961, served as the Hall's chairman until June 1971 and the National Hockey League honored his contributions to the game by introducing the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1965. He died at the age of 85 in Toronto, Canada. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
