He graduated at the United States Military Academy in 1842, participated in the Mexican War, was wounded in the battle of Molino del Rey, September 8, 1847 and promoted captain on September 13, 1847. From November 1848 until October 1849, he was acting assistant adjutant-general at the headquarters in St. Louis, Missouri. He was quartermaster of the 6th infantry, October 1849 until November 1854, when he was ordered to the Pacific coast, was in the frontier Indian wars and was ordered to San Francisco, where he served as quartermaster until his retirement in 1870. During the Civil War he served as Major Chief Quartermaster of the Department of the Pacific in 1861 and subsequently the Department of California as acting chief of commissariat in 1866. For faithful and meritorious services in the quartermaster's department during the war, he was brevetted brigadier general on March 13, 1865. After his Army service he relocated in Oakland, California, where he ran the best libraries on the Pacific coast related to military subjects until his death.
