Sadie (Galbreath) Bettger-Keesling died June 5, 2003. Sadie was born on November 24, 1918, on a farm near Tuttle, North Dakota. As a youngster, she attended a one room school house and as a teenager, when her horse got tangled in a fence, she met Wes Bettger, who she later married. She attended college at Valley City, North Dakota. She later ventured out West on the train in 1939 to meet Wes in Portola. They were married in Reno on June 1, 1939.
Sadie worked for the local telephone company, earning her way up to the All Night Chief Operator. Wes and Sadie saved their money and opened up Super Service Electric in Portola, in 1950.
She was active in her community, becoming the parade chairman for the Portola Water Festival in 1960. She also helped to build the community swimming pool. Along with parades, Sadie was also willing to sing, harmonize, entertain and add some special spirit to any fund-raiser or community event.
Following the death of her husband, she remarried George Keesling in 1967. They enjoyed the time spent together gardening, bowling, golfing, traveling and being companions until George's death in 1985.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands; and her sister, Elvia. She is survived by her daughters, Marlys and Susan; and three grandchildren. Graveside inurnment will take place Sat., June 14 at 10:00 a.m. at Shady Grove Cemetery in Portola. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. that same day at Portola United Methodist Church.
