Jarrett Donald Wood, age 77, of Donelson, Tennessee died at his home May 28, 2000. Mr. Wood was preceded in death by daughter, Jan Wood. Survived by his wife, Maie Wood, daughter, Jill Wood; son in law, Don Jarvis; grandson Jarrett Jarvis. Mr. Wood was a long time Member of Andrew Price United Methodist Church. A retiree of the Tennessee State Department of Education and Mr. Wood was a 50 year Mason and served during World War II in the Medical Corp in the European Theatre. After graduating from Lambuth College and George Peabody College, he taught; served as principal and later as Superintendent of McNairy County Schools. In 1959 he was selected by the State Department of Education to serve as the first supervisor of science education for the state of Tennessee. Following a successful tenure as science supervisor he was promoted to Director of the National Defense Education Act, which was the first matching Federal Aid to states for the purpose of improving instruction in the critical areas of Science, Mathematics and Modern Language. He provoded further leadership over the years in many areas including management services, school approval and leadership as the Executive Sec'y of the Supervisors Study Council and the Superintendents Study Council. He was a Member of both the Tennessee and Nationall Academies of Science and received Outstanding Science Educator Awards from both. Mr. Wood retired from the Tennessee Department of Education in 1983.
