Prime Minister of Spain. He received notoriety as a Spanish politician during the early 19th century, serving as prime minister for less than a year, from September 25, 1835 to May 15, 1836. He was educated in banking, becoming a respected economist. He served in the military during the Peninsular War of 1807 to 1814, battling Napoleon forces over the control of the Iberian Peninsula. He was given the task of supplying the troops that were sent to America in 1820. After King Ferdinand VII renounced the Constitution of 1812 and declared absolute power in 1823, he went to England in exile and began a trade business. By 1835 when Spanish politics had changed, he returned to Spain being appointed Minister of the Treasury. By September of 1835, he became prime minister in hope to decrease the Spanish debt, end war, and to privatize holdings. Unable to reach these goals, he resigned within the year. After the Spanish Constitution of 1812 was put back in place, he was appointed Minister of Finance. He established freedom of the press. He abolished tithes and confiscated the Roman Catholic Church properties. In 1837 a more moderate government was elected. He was again appointed Minister of Finance in 1843 but had to go in exile for four years when the moderates came back to power. In 1847 after returning to Spain, he occupied a seat in the parliament until his death in 1853.
