WAR OF 1812

Son of John and Mary McKay Blue, husband of Effie Gilchrist.

"John Blue II was left fatherless at the age of five years and must have had a wise mother, for he grew up to be one of the most prominent and highly respected men of his community. Records in Washington show that he served his country in the War of 1812 as Captain of a company designated as Captain John Blue's Company, Major Cameron's Command, North Carolina Militia, from July 29, 1812, to November 8, 1813, and from December 1, 1813, to January 29, 1814.

On October 6, 1814 he married Effie Gilchrist the only child of John Gilchrist and his second wife, Flora McKay Currie. In the same place he was born and spent his childhood, Captain Blue built a new home for his bride (the house still standing after 126 years). He was a wealthy man for his day and left all of his children well provided for. To his wife he devised, committing his three daughters to the joint guardianship of his wife and three of his intimate friends: William Buchanan, Milton McIntosh, and Daniel Graham. His second daughter, Jennet, married her guardian, William Buchanan, when she was only sixteen. Sarah Ann married the third guardian, Daniel Graham, when she was only fifteen."

Children:
1) Mary Blue, born August 4, 1815 died about 1885. Never married.
2) Jennet Buchanan Blue, born May 17, 1817, died May 31, 1893.
