Paul Foot
Birth: Nov. 8, 1937
Death: Jul. 18, 2004

Pioneering British socialist and investigative journalist. The son of Sir Hugh Foot (Lord Caradon) the last British governor of Cyprus and the UK's Ambassador to the United Nations from 1964 to 1970, the nephew of Sir Dingle,an MP for both the Liberal and Labour parties, whilst another uncle was Michael Foot, another former Liberal MP who was leader of the Labour Party from 1980 to 1983. He was educated at Shrewsbury College and University College, Oxford. After leaving university he became a reporter on the Daily Record in Glasgow. It was while covering local issues that Foot became converted to left-wing socialism. Books by Foot during his time in Glasgow were "Race in British Politics" (1965), "The Politics of Harold Wilson" (1968), "The Rise of Enoch Powell" (1969) and "Who Killed Hanratty?" (1971). He also worked for Private Eye (1974 to 1975) before becoming editor of the Socialist Worker (1975 to 1979). Foot became an investigative reporter for The Daily Mirror in 1979. Over the next fourteen years he investigated political corruption and miscarriages of justice, including the cases of James Hanratty, John Poulson, Helen Smith, Jeffrey Archer, Jeremy Thorpe, John Stalker, Carl Bridgewater, Roberto Calvi and Colin Wallace. Foot resigned from the Daily Mirror in 1993 when attempts were made to ban an article attacking the newspaper's new chief executive. For the rest of his life he wrote for both The Guardian and Private Eye. He wrote many more books including "Why You Should Be A Socialist" (1977), "Murder at the Farm: Who Killed Carl Bridgewater?" (1988) and Articles of Resistance (2000). Paul Foot's funeral at Golders Green on the 27th July, 2004 was attended by well over 1,000 people and included many polital figures and journalists. (bio by: Kieran Smith)
