Singer. He was best known for his work with the music group The Temptations. Born Otis Robert Harris, Jr., he grew up listening to healthy doses of Motown's greats among them Smokey Robinson and The Miracles, Marvin Gaye and his favorite of them all, The Temptations. He initiated his singing career in his local church choir and at the age of twenty, he joined his first vocal ensemble named The Young Temps (later changing their name to The Young Vandals). Under the guidance of the T-Neck record label formed by The Isley Brothers, they recorded several cover songs of Motown artists which had a minor impact on the R&B Charts in 1970. The members parted ways soon after. A friend advised Harris to tryout for an opening for The Temptations left after Eddie Kendricks departed to pursue a solo career. Harris clinched the spot and joined the legendary group during their transition into the 1970s as their style adapted to that time period. They enjoyed immense success with the Grammy Award-winning hit "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" (1972), for which topped the charts and displayed Harris' vocal talents. In 1973, their "Masterpiece" album was released. Tragically, member Paul Williams (whom suffered from a variety of health issues and depression) took his life in August of 1973. Harris remained with the group for two more years until a disagreement led to his departure. He revived his old group The Young Vandals and after a few of their albums failed to generate sales and a brief solo career was unsuccessful, he retired from the industry. He went onto attain a college degree and work with special needs youths in Nevada. At the age of 47, Harris was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer and received treatment which led to the disease's remission. This prompted Harris to establish his own prostate cancer foundation. He as inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of The Temptations in 1989.
