World War I Victoria Cross Recipient. He served as a Flight Lieutenant in the 84th Fighter Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. In airways over Cesson-Sévigné, France, between the dates of August 8, to October 8, 1918, Flight Lieutenant Beauchamp-Proctor was credited with 54 air combat victories to include 28 German aircraft, 26 kite balloons and destroyed countless enemy ground positions. For most prestigious gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was promoted Captain and awarded the Victoria Cross on November 30, 1918, He was South Africa's leading ace of World War I and the first South African aviator to be vested the Victoria Cross. After the war he was an instructor at Central Flying School, Upavon, England, where he was killed in a flying accident at age 26.
