He was named for his grandfather and was the son of Hannah (Hoes) and Martin Van Buren. With his three bachelor brothers and widowed father he moved to the White House after his father was elected President. There he would serve as his father's personal secretary. He married on November 27, 1838, Angelica Singleton who would become the First lady throughout his father's term in office. After leaving Washington they divided their time between Lindenwald, his father's home at Kinderhook, and winter in South Carolina at the home of his father-in-law, which his wife would inherit. They lived in New York City from 1848 where he died and his wife remained a widow until her death in 1877.
