Singer. He was best known for his work as a member of The Temptations. He began his association as a performer with the local Detroit doo-wop ensemble The Distants and it was during this time period when he became friends with future Temptation Otis Williams. Street, (the cousin of Temptations' Melvin Franklin) landed a position with Motown Records in 1963 as a behind-the-scenes contributor during The Temptations' recordings. On occasion, he lent his voice as a backup on certain tracks. When singer Paul Williams began to suffer from ill health, Street would take his place for tours. When Williams departed permanently in 1971, Street replaced him in the lineup and during that time period he played a significant role in changing the group's direction and sound to reflect the 1970s with substance-based songs regarding culture and other happenings that were then affecting the country. During his tenure, the Grammy Award-winning hit "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" (1972) was released along with the songs "Take A Look Around" (1972) "Masterpiece" (1973). He departed after a confrontation with co-member Otis Williams in 1993. Street was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of The Temptations in 1989. His former group mate Damon Harris died nine days before Street's death.
