Business figure. His art Noveau Memorial was created by Karl Bitter. Henry Villard was born April 10, 1835 in Speyer, Vavaria and immigrated to the US in 1853. He studied law, and worked as a newspaper reporter during the Civil War, for both The New York Herald and the New York Tribune. In 1875 he helped reorganize the Oregon and California Railroad and the Oregon Steamship Company, and became president of both companies. By 1881 he was president of Northern Pacific Railroad and completed the transcontinental line. He purchased the Edison Lamp Company of Newark, NJ and the Edison General Electric Company in 1889 and reorganized them into General Electric Company by 1893. He was Thomas A. Edison's source of financing.
