British Aristocracy. Born William Thomas Knollys, the son of general William Knollys and Charlotte Blackwell. He was styled as Viscount Wallingford before 1813. He was educated at Harrow and Sandhurst, receiving a commision by December 1813 in the Scots Fusilier Guards, and was immediately posted to the field during last year of the Peninsular Wars. In September 1830, he married Elizabeth St Aubyn with whom he had two sons. He gained the rank of Major-General in 1854, and held the office of Governor of Guernsey between 1854 and 1855. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1860, and held the office of Treasurer and Comptroller of the Household of the Prince of Wales between 1862 and 1877. He gained the rank of General in 1866, and was invested as a Knight Commander, Order of the Bath in 1867. He was invested as a Privy Counsellor in March 1872 and held the office of Groom of the Stole to The Prince of Wales; of Gentleman Usher of the Black Rod between 1877 and 1883; and of Receiver-General of the Duchy of Cornwall between 1878 and 1883.
