Uncle Henry as he was more commonly known, was the son of Mason Tarpley and Nancy Bass. He enlisted with Captain Duffe's Company Infantry N.B. Forrest Army on June 8, 1861, Macon, Tennessee. he was only 14 years old at the time of his enlistment. Served from that time until the Civil War ended. He served with distinction through out the war in the major battles of Shiloh, Murphysboro, Perryville and Franklin.
On September 4, 1865, he married Catherine Bass. Children of this union were 4 that died in infancy, Frances Danniel, Nancy Jane, and twin boys. Four that lived to be adults; Martha Jane, Sarah Marie, Susie, and William G. Tarpley.

Aged Culleoka Citizen Passes Away; Reached Four Score and Ten
Henry Tarpley died at his home in the Thompson Community at 9:20 o'clock p.m. Aug. 21. Old age was the cause of death. The announcement of his death was not a surprise to those who knew of his feebleness, the end had been almost hourly expected for several weeks. The deceased was born in Wabash County, Illinois, Aug. 7, 1832. He was therefore, 80 years and 11 days old. Uncle Henry fought for the cause between the States. He enlisted in Duffey's company at Hartsville, Tenn., June 8, 1861; he participated in many of the bloody battles, among them was Wild Cat, Rock Creek, and Fishing Creek, Kentucky, and Shiloh and Murfreesboro and a number of other engagements; including the battles at Perryville and Franklin, Kentucky, and had been prisoner three weeks at Corinth, Miss., when the war closed. He landed in Collin County with his family in November, 1867, moving from Wilson County, Tennessee in wagons; first stopped near Melissa, moved to his home which he occupied at time of death in January 1877. (date is not right according to cemetery. records). Deceased is survived by his aged companion and the following daughters: Mrs. C. S. Akin of Princeton; Mrs. Lon Tackett of Farmersville, and many more relatives. Deceased had long been an active member of the Bethany Missionary Baptist church. He was prepared for the moment when the immortal spirit should be borne away to the Heavenly home where troubles and infirmities from old age are unknown. The funeral services were conducted at the home at 4 o'clock on Thursday evening, Aug. 22 by Rev. Abe Enlow, who had for several years been pastor of the deceased. His body was laid to rest in the Old Backbone Cemetery near Culleoka. A large concourse of sorrowing relatives followed the remains in their last resting place. This editor has known Uncle Henry for many years and esteemed him among our very best friends. His kindly nature and ever cheerful word drew to him numerous friends who will mourn his loss. Full of years and possessed of the esteem of his fellow citizens, Uncle Henry, like a ripened sheaf was gathered to his Fathers before him to enjoy an eternal reward awaiting him. We join other friends in extending heartfelt sympathy to his sorrowing loved ones.
