Maryland Governor. Educated at St. John's College in Annapolis, he entered politics and served as a member of the Maryland House of Delegates, (1813-20). In 1829, he was elected as a National Republican the 20th Maryland Governor, serving until his death from a stomach illness in 1831. As Governor, he recommended reducing state office holders, endorsed road and canal improvements, lobbied for a better public school system and was devoted to improving the state's penal system. He was the second Maryland Governor to die in office.
