Soldier. Born in Bristol, the son of a cooper, Woodham enlisted as a private in the 11th Hussars (now the King’s Royal Hussars) in June 1847. On 25 October 1854, during the Crimean War, he was one of the men who took part in the ill conceived charge over open terrain in the Battle of Balaclava when 637 men advanced, leading to 247 men killed or wounded, the 11th specifically lost 55 men and 3 officers. Wounded, he was one of the survivors of the charge, which was later immortalized by Alfred, Lord Tennyson in his poem “The Charge of the Light Brigade.” A decade later, he married Maria Jane Blizard, and they had four children. He later took the role of Chairman of the Balaclava Committee, and organized a reunion dinner in October 1875 in London to commemorate the 21st Anniversary of the Charge. The event was thoroughly covered by the Illustrated London News. He died at age 55.
