Stephen moved with his parents to Stillwater, Oklahoma a year after the opening (about 1890) and lived there until 1917 when he moved to the Texas Oil Lease West of Yale, Oklahoma. He lived there for 4 years and moved to Yale where he resided until his death. He was employed by the Sun Oil Company. He was a half-brother to James Monroe Berger and half-brother to Mrs. Hattie Lyon of Port Angles, Washington. He had a step-son, Mr. O.L. Harman of Yale and step-daughter Mrs. Paul V. Keen of Norman, Oklahoma.
