FORT SCOTT —
Donald Paul McDermed, age 78, resident of Fort Scott, Kansas, died Thursday evening, March 14, 2013, at Mercy Hospital Joplin, Missouri.
He was born October 16, 1934, in Girard, Kansas, the son of Virgil McDermed and Letha Oldham McDermed. Paul graduated from the Girard High School. He later served with the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, Paul married Margaret Colegrove on June 11, 1959, at Denver, Colorado. Paul had worked Westinghouse Elevator Company in Denver, Colorado and later for Dover Elevator Company in Topeka. The family later moved to Fort Scott where Paul operated his own farm and dairy. He later was employed as an electrician for Ward-Kraft. Paul was a member of the Hiattville Masonic Lodge and the Hiattville Order of the Eastern Star, the Scottish Rite, the Mirza Shrine and the Mirza Mounted Patrol.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret, of the home; three sons, Mark LaForte and wife, Joan, Girard, Kansas, Kevin McDermed and wife, Shelly, Uniontown, Kansas, and Todd McDermed and wife, Kim, Fort Scott, Kansas; nine grandchildren, Wade and Seth LaForte and Jordan, Trenton, Tyler, Megan, Joshua, Shyleen, and Kenneth McDermed; and two step-great-grandsons, Lucas and Cabe Wilson. Also surviving are a brother, Harold McDermed, Warrensburg, Missouri, and two sisters, Bonnie Prideaux and Margaret Nelson, both of Girard, Kansas. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Charles and Floyd McDermed.
Pastor Richard Prideaux will conduct funeral services at 1:00 P.M. Monday, March 18th at the Cheney Witt Memorial Chapel. Masonic rites will be conducted by the Hiattville Masonic Lodge. Burial will follow in the Girard City Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Girard American Legion. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 P.M. Sunday at the Cheney Witt Chapel.
