Chief Warrant Officer 3, U.S. Army, Afghanistan War-CWO Groves, husband of Mrs. Katie Elaine {Nielsen} Groves, died in the line of duty on 3-16-2013 while conducting combat operations flying with the 3rd Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division. He was on his fourth tour of duty.

He is the son of Mr. James E. & Mrs. Leslie Groves, II of Kettering, Ohio, and the husband of Mrs. Katie {Nielsen} Groves of Savannah, Georgia and the father of two sons, James E. Groves IV {Bubba|, and Shane Alan Groves. He does leave one older sister, Miss Jeannette.

Katie & James were married in Peoria, Illinois on September 7, 1998. James & Katie met when they were in the Army in Colorado.

Awards: Bronze Star Medal, Iraq & Afghan Service Medals, Air Medal with OLCs, Pilot Wings, National Defense Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal.

Footnote: Mr. Groves married the third daughter of my wife's older brother, Mr. Kenneth Paul & Mrs. Karen {Wenzel} Nielsen of Peoria, Illinois.
