Another of our pioneers of Vermillion County has been called from the toils of the earth to the glorious reward that awaits the faithful in the mysterious beyond. Last Tuesday at 5 o'clock p.m., Uncle Samuel Aikman, age 76 years, after an illness of many months, was suddenly called away. Uncle Sam, as he was called by all who knew him, was born in Davies County in 1814. He was married in 1833 and in 1834 he moved to Toronto. By industry and frugality he accumulated considerable property, and in 1879 moved to Dana, being the principal founder of this thriving little village. For many years he was engaged in the breeding and rearing of blooded stock, creating quite an interest in that industry for many miles around. Although a member of no church organization, he was a great friend to the Christian work, contributing freely of his means for the building and maintenance of churches. It is said that there is not a church or schoolhouse in this township that was not constructed partly from his contributions. Funeral services were conducted Thursday noon at the house by Rev. Hook and Rev. Griffith. Immediately after the services, the remains were taken to the Helt's Prairie Cemetery for interment.
