Major League Baseball Player. Born in La Crosse, Wisconsin, he was a first baseman making his debut with the St. Louis Cardinals on June 29, 1907. For fifteen seasons, he played with the St. Louis Cardinals (1907-13), Pittsburgh Pirates (1914), Pittsburgh Rebels (1915), Boston Braves (1916-18), Brooklyn Robins (1919-20) and Philadelphia Phillies (1921). He batted over .300 four times, ending his career with a record of 2150 hits, 74 home runs, 992 runs batted in and a .281 batting average. In addition to being an infielder, he also pitched in middle relief for the St. Louis Cardinals (1910, 1913) and Boston Braves (1918), with a record of 1 win, 1 loss, 6 strikeouts and a 4.32 earned run average. He died at age 62 of heart disease in Fort Worth, Texas, and was posthumously inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 1961.
